Monkeying Around: On the Trails and In the Mind

In the middle of my short run, I was subjected to the negative thoughts of a “capricious” and “uncontrollable” mind. However, by watching my thoughts as separate from myself, I was able to keep them from having too much of a negative impact on my mood and I could refocus on my breathing and running. Finally, seeing how thoughts can be so extreme and arbitrary – from elated self-congratulations one day to whiny catastrophizing on another, led me to amusingly conclude that it is important not to take thoughts too seriously without examining them deeper.
